An Australian Child Protection Offender Reporting scheme was established by legislation in each Australian State and Territory. The Queensland component of the scheme was established by the Child Protection (Offender Reporting and Offender Prohibition Order) Act 2004.
This national scheme requires child sex offenders, and other defined categories of serious offenders against children, to keep police informed of their whereabouts and other personal details for a period of time after they are released into the community.
This register is not intended to be punitive in nature but is implemented to protect the community by reducing the likelihood that an offender will reoffend and to facilitate the investigation and prosecution of any future offences that they may commit.
Management of the scheme in Queensland is the responsibility of the Queensland Police Service.
The Child Protection Offender Registry, which is part of Child Abuse and Sexual Crime Group, State Crime Command, is the unit responsible for the management of reportable offenders in Queensland. This is supported at a local level by police officers who work in the community and are assigned as case managers for these persons.
Legislation was passed in 2014 which permits the use of current technology and allows registered persons to report online.
If you are subject to reporting obligations and wish to make a periodic report, report of travel or to report a change of details, you are able to do so online.
Privacy
The Queensland Police Service collects information to assist in performing its statutory functions and responsibilities. Information provided will be used to process your application, create a police report, and/or resolve your complaint, compliment or query. Your personal information will be managed in compliance with the Information Privacy Act 2009.
There is the provision on some online forms to opt out of providing any personal information. In these instances, the QPS will not collect, store, or use any personal information, and the above stipulations do therefore not apply.
