Queensland Blue Light

Queensland Blue Light Association Incorporated (QLD Blue Light) is a non-for-profit charity which aligns with Queensland Government priorities and Queensland Police Service youth crime prevention strategies. QLD Blue Light offer evidenced based, early intervention and primary prevention programs designed to educate, empower, and support young people.

QLD Blue Light motto:

Mission: Police, community and young people achieving through early intervention.

Values: Respect, Inclusion, Compassion.

Vision: Every young person to reach their potential and live free of crime.

For more than 40 years, the Queensland Police Service has proudly partnered with QLD Blue Light. And while known for their iconic discos, which are still a fundamental part of their identity, Police and QLD Blue Light community volunteers (all with Working with Children blue cards) also work together to mentor young people to make healthy life choices, form positive relationships, reach their potential, and live a life free of crime.

QLD Blue Light programs and activities are unique in that they can be delivered anywhere police are located, and do not require designated facilities. Programs and activities can be adapted to suit local needs and include a focus in remote and rural areas. QLD Blue Light have a team of four staff with positions all funded through grants. The Queensland Police Service allocate a full-time police sergeant as Blue Light Policing Coordinator, and the Police Commissioner is the QLD Blue Light Patron.

QLD Blue Light programs delivered by police and community volunteers include:

Blue Light Branches: a partnership between local police and community volunteers to engage and mentor young people. Each branch is coordinated by a police officer and typically organise discos, movie nights, pool parties and other youth specific events. There are currently 37 Blue Light branches in Queensland.

The Blue Edge Program (Educate, Develop, Grow, Empower): a program of physical training designed to extend a young person’s mind and physical capability. The program also includes career education, motivational speakers, mentoring and healthy lifestyle advice to support young people (aged 12-17) reach their potential. The program runs over 8 weeks, two sessions a week with a final edge day of fun activities to reward student participation and commitment.

The Shearing Program: an eight-week course run over two years that teaches all aspects of wool handling including shearing, crutching, and wool pressing, enabling participants to earn a Certificate II in Rural Operations. The program provides an opportunity for young people from rural areas to be mentored by police officers and other role models, and a pathway to employment.

Blue Lures: a police supervised fortnightly fishing program for youth aged 8 to 17. The program promotes positive participation with a simple goal: to engage with the local community and create a fun, safe environment where young people can learn new skills, make friends, and build relationships with their peers and the police. Blue Lures is a preventive and diversionary tool for local police to foster positive, informal interactions with young people. This initiative aims to build trust and break down barriers between young people and law enforcement. By offering a safe, inclusive, and engaging experience, Blue Lures allows participants to learn new skills, appreciate the outdoors, and encourage a healthy lifestyle.
