Southern Region is a geographically large area, spreading as far east as Goodna and Springfield, south to the New South Wales border, west to the South Australian border, and north to the Carnarvon and Idalia National Parks. It is a diverse region, encompassing metropolitan areas as well as rural and remote areas. Travel time from the Regional Headquarters in Toowoomba can range from a one-minute walk to Toowoomba Station to a 10.5-hour drive to Eromanga Station.
Southern Region is renowned for abundant heritage, a variety of national parks and expanding mining interests. The region is the centre of a vast agricultural and pastoral area, producing cotton, grain, wool, beef, lamb and pork. New renewable energy projects in Southern Region include solar farms and wind farms in the South Burnett and Western Downs areas.
The Region experiences extreme temperature variations with Stanthorpe holding Queensland’s record minimum temperature of -10.6 degrees Celsius and Thargomindah holding the regional record maximum of 47.7 degrees Celsius.
The Southern Region is a favoured location for migration. The city of Toowoomba has received resettled war refugees for more than 20 years, particularly people of Sudanese and Yazidi backgrounds. In Ipswich District, the Springfield and Ripley suburbs have communities of migrants with an African background as well as migrants from English and non-English speaking backgrounds.
Darling Downs District
The central hub of the District is Toowoomba where the District Office and Southern Regional Office is located. The Darling Downs District extends from Proston and Murgon in the north, Laidley and Killarney to the east, New South Wales border in the south, and west to Talwood and Goondiwindi.

Ipswich District
Ipswich District is at the intersection of routes to the Darling Downs, Fassifern Valley and Brisbane Valley and less than one hour's drive to the Gold Coast. Ipswich is strategically located in the heart of one of Southeast Queensland's dynamic growth corridors. The Ipswich District extends from Harlin in the north, to Goodna and Springfield in the east, Minden in the west, and south to the New South Wales border.

South West District
The South West District is the largest district geographically in the Southern Region and one of the largest in Queensland. The District extends from Carnarvon and Idalia National Parks in the north, to Dalby in the east, New South Wales border in the south and as far west as the South Australian border. The South West District includes the outback channel country in the very far west of the State. It is a diverse area, encompassing rural and semi-rural residential communities to vast expanses of agricultural land in isolated and remote areas.
