Before you start your application, please read this information carefully. This will help you to have everything ready before you start.
To apply for a weapons licence in Queensland you must:
- Meet the personal eligibility requirements
- Have a genuine reason to hold a licence
- Have access to secure weapon storage
- Complete an approved weapons safety course covering the category of weapon you’re applying for and provide your statement of attainment. For more information on safety course
- Provide the supporting documentation requested during the application process (learn more below)
- Provide a passport-quality digital image of your head and shoulders against a plain background. This image will be printed on your licence card if your application is approved. When you attend an Australia Post outlet, you will need to be prepared for a passport quality photograph to be taken.
- Pay the required fees (learn more below)
- Attend an Australia Post outlet and provide your proof of identity when you are advised by Weapons Licensing. You will be advised in via email.
We will let you know by email if your weapons licence is approved (if supplied), otherwise you will receive your issued firearms licence in the mail.
What supporting documentation will I need to provide?
When you start your application, you will select the type of licence you are applying for and your genuine reason for applying. Once you’ve made these selections, you’ll be advised which documents you need to supply. If you need to complete a form, visit our weapons forms library. Your supporting documents should be saved as PDF, TIFF, JPEG or GIF files no larger than 2MB per file.
If you do not provide the required documents, there may be substantial delays.

We strongly recommend that you contact your local club or dealer to help you to complete your licence application, and to ensure you submit the required documentation.
If your application does not meet our requirements it could be refused, or there could be substantial delays while we seek further information from you.
