Firearms licence supporting documents

When you apply for a new firearms licence for one of the following genuine reasons, you must provide the supporting documents as listed under the relevant genuine reason below, with your application and as evidence of your genuine reason: 

Recreational shooting on rural lands

Evidence of property ownership:

  • If you are the owner of the property - A copy of the rates notice for property
  • If you are the lessee of the property - A copy of the lease agreement for property, or
  • If you are the manager of the property - A copy of the employment contract as manager and can act on the owner/lessee's behalf on the property.

Applying online: You may notice that this genuine reason also requires the completion of a Form 1 – Annexure for Recreational Shooting/Recreational fishing.  You will need to supply a Form 1 – Annexure for Recreational Shooting/Recreational fishing with your online application however, if you apply hard copy, this will not be required.

Sports or target shooting

Categories A and B – Financial Club Membership – Proof of current financial membership of an approved Queensland shooting club. This proof is to clearly show the name of the club, your name and the full expiry date of your membership. 
Note: Club membership that is under application or renewal is are not acceptable.

Category C – Financial Club Membership – Proof of current club membership of an approved Queensland shooting club that takes part in, or is affiliated with, a body that takes part in, national and international clay target shooting competitions. This is to be in the form of a signed current letter on letterhead from the approved Queensland shooting club clearly showing the name of the club, your name, the expiry date of your membership and that you participate in clay target shooting.
Note: Club membership that is under application or renewal is not acceptable.

Category C – Medical Certificate – A current certificate or report signed by your doctor supporting that because of a medical condition, you have a physical need, due to a lack of strength or dexterity for a Category C shotgun to take part in clay target shooting. This report is to detail at a minimum:

  • doctor’s name and contact details
  • reason for the doctor coming to that opinion
  • doctor’s opinion in relation to the person
  • period of time the doctor has been treating the applicant
  • sufficient details of any health condition supporting a lack of strength or physical dexterity for a Category shotgun to take part in clay target shooting
  • history taken from the applicant.

Primary Producer

Evidence of property ownership:

  • If you are the owner of the property - A copy of the rates notice for property,
  • If you are the lessee of the property - A copy of the lease agreement for property, or
  • If you are the manager of the property - A copy of the employment contract as manager and can act on the owner/lessee's behalf on the property.
Proof of occupation – Proof of sales (stock or crops); Proof of purchase (hay, farming equipment, etc)

This information is required for each property you intend on utilising weapons as part of your occupational need. If you are lodging your application hard copy at your local post office, you will need to provide these documents as a 'additional genuine reason documents'.

Applying Online: You may notice that this genuine reason also requires the completion of a Form 1 – Annexure for Primary Production.  You will need to supply a Form 1 – Annexure for Primary Production with your online application however, if you apply hard copy, this will not be required.

Occupational - rural employee

Proof of occupation – Employer verification – To prove your employment on this rural land you must provide copies of three (3) current and consecutive payslips from your employer.

Evidence of property ownership:

  • If you are the owner of the property - A copy of the rates notice for property
  • If you are the lessee of the property - A copy of the lease agreement for property, or
  • If you are the manager of the property - A copy of the employment contract as manager and can act on the owner/lessee's behalf on the property.

If you wish to use weapons for an occupational reason for more than one rural address, this information is required for each address. If you are lodging your application hard copy at your local post office, you will need to provide these documents as a 'additional genuine reason documents'.

Applying online: You may notice that this genuine reason also requires the completion of a Form 1 – Annexure for Rural Employee.  You will need to supply a Form 1 – Annexure for Rural Employee with your online application however, if you apply hard copy, this will not be required.

Gun dog retrieval

Financial club membership – Proof of current membership of a Queensland Gun Dog Retrieval club. This proof is to include the name of the club, your name, and a membership expiry date.

Applying online: You may notice that this genuine reason is only available to choose from a list of genuine reasons on the hard copy application and not on our online application.  If you wish to apply online for this licence and genuine reason type, you will be required to use a genuine reason of sports or target shooting and provide financial club membership for the Gun Dog Retrieval club you are a member of. You should also upload a supporting letter explaining that the application is for Gun dog retrieval.

Military re-enactment / historical demonstration

Financial club membership – military re-enactment – Proof of current financial membership of a recognised military re-enactment club/society. This proof is to clearly state your name and the expiry date of the membership, category of weapons required and must only be for the category of the weapons endorsed on your weapons licence.

Supporting letter – Stating the intended use for the firearms – Display or Discharge?

If you apply for a licence of this type, you can only use firearms for military re-enactment events approved by an authorised officer. 

If you wish to use firearms for another purpose, you should choose another genuine reason as your primary genuine reason and use this genuine reason as an additional genuine reason. (For example: you may wish to apply for a Sports or target shooting firearms licence and provide financial membership for your local gun club.  You may also supply financial membership of a recognised military re-enactment club/society and you will receive conditions on your licence which allow you to do both.)

Occupational - abattoir

Business plan – Copy of your business plan with business name – please only include pages relevant to the following: Addressing Risk, Police Contact, Firearm Use and Community Safety

Business public liability insurance – Copy of your public liability Insurance

Business/employer letterhead – A current and signed letter on a business letterhead verifying:

  • the reason why firearms are necessary
  • the position held by the applicant
  • the category of firearms required to use and
  • the nature of the duties undertaken in the conduct of your business/occupation.

Non-rural property protection and safety documents – The inclusion of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Stating how you will operate, For Example: risk assessment, contacting police, how the firearms are used with protection of property and safety of persons paramount.

If you are an employee of an abattoir, your employer provides this information for you to supply with your application.

Applying online: You may notice that this genuine reason is only available to choose from a list of genuine reasons on the hard copy application and not on our online application.  If you wish to apply online for this licence and genuine reason type, you will be required to use a genuine reason of 'occupational' and provide documentation as per the information outlined above. You should also upload a supporting letter explaining that the application is for occupational – abattoir.

Occupational - Accredited game meat harvester

Safe food certificate – A copy of your current Certificate of Accreditation issued by Safefood Queensland.

Evidence of property ownership:

  • if you are the owner of the property - A copy of the rates notice for property
  • if you are the lessee of the property - A copy of the lease agreement for property, or
  • if you are the manager of the property - A copy of the employment contract as manager and can act on the owner/lessee's behalf on the property.

Applying online: You may notice that this genuine reason also requires the completion of a Form 1 – Annexure for Occupational/Employment.  You will need to supply a Form 1 – Annexure for Occupational/Employment with your online application however, if you apply hard copy, this will not be required.

Animal controller

Business plan – Copy of your Business Plan with Business Name – only include pages relevant to the following: Addressing Risk, Police Contact, Firearm Use and Community Safety.

Business public liability insurance – Copy of your Public Liability Insurance.

Business/employer letterhead – A current and signed letter on a business letterhead verifying:

  • the reasons why firearms are necessary
  • the position held by the applicant
  • the categories of firearms required to use
  • the nature of the duties undertaken in the conduct of your business/occupation.

Non-rural property protection and safety documents – The inclusion of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) stating how you will operate, For example: risk assessment, contacting police, how the firearms are used with protection of property and safety of persons paramount.

If you are an employee of an animal controller, your employer provides this information for you to supply with your application.

If your employer holds a group licence, you will need to ensure the group licence number and expiry date are included in the space provided on your Form 1 – Application for a Licence.

Occupational - biopsy gun

To be eligible for a licence for a biopsy gun, your employer or university will be required to hold a Firearms Licence (Group) and you will be required to use the firearms registered to the Firearms Licence (Group). This means you will receive a condition on the licence that does not allow you to register firearms to your licence. 

Business/employer letterhead – A current and signed letter on a business letterhead verifying:
  • the reason why firearms are necessary,
  • the position held by the applicant,
  • the category of firearms required to use, and
  • the nature of the duties undertaken in the conduct of your business/occupation.

If you are an employee, your employer provides this information for you to supply with your application.

If your employer holds a group licence, you will need to ensure the group licence number and expiry date are included in the space provided on your Form 1 – Application for a Licence.

Applying online: You may notice that this genuine reason is only available to choose from a list of genuine reasons on the hard copy application and not on our online application. If you wish to apply online for this licence and genuine reason type, you will be required to use a genuine reason of 'Occupational' and provide documentation as per the information outlined above. You should also upload a supporting letter explaining that the application is for Occupational – Biopsy gun.

Occupational - commercial fisher

Commercial fisher licence – A copy of your current Commercial Fisher licence number, issued by the Department of Primary Industries

Business letterhead – A written submission, outlining the following:

  • What type of business will be conducted and why is the use of a firearm necessary for the conduct of the business?
  • If you require the use of Powerhead weapons, provide details as to the duties that a weapon of this type is required for.

Occupational - Commercial wildlife harvester (macropod harvester)

Harvesting licence – A copy of your current Macropod Harvesting Licence, issued by Department of Environment and Science.

Evidence of property ownership:

  • If you are the owner of the property - A copy of the rates notice for property
  • If you are the lessee of the property - A copy of the lease agreement for property, or
  • If you are the manager of the property - A copy of the employment contract as manager and can act on the owner/lessee's behalf on the property.

Applying online: You may notice that this genuine reason also requires the completion of a Form 1 – Annexure for Occupational/Employment.  You will need to supply a Form 1 – Annexure for Occupational/Employment with your online application however, if you apply hard copy, this will not be required.

Occupational - Feral animal controller

Letters of intent: Current and signed letters of intent from (3) three properties (e.g. area of intended work) to operate from to support the occupational genuine reason, including payment agreements and full property details (including Shire).

Proof of occupation – Accountant letter — Letter from your accountant stating you are registered with the Australian Tax Office as a feral animal controller.

Business registration certificate – Registered business name (ASIC extract)

Business plan – Copy of your Business Plan with Business Name – only include pages relevant to the following: Addressing Risk, Police Contact, Firearm Use and Community Safety

Business public liability insurance – Copy of your public liability insurance

Non-Rural Property Protection and Safety documents – The inclusion of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) stating how you will operate, For example: risk assessment, contacting police, how the firearms are used with protection of property and safety of persons paramount.

If your employer holds a group licence, you will need to ensure the group licence number and expiry date are included in the space provided on your Form 1 – Application for a Licence.

Government service entity verification – A current and signed letter on letterhead from your employer, verifying that you are employed by a Government Service Entity and which outlines which category and the duties for which firearms are necessary.

Occupational - livestock transporter

Business/employer letterhead – A current and signed letter on a business letterhead verifying:

Business plan – Copy of your business plan with business name – only include pages relevant to the following: Addressing Risk, Police Contact, Firearm Use and Community Safety, the reasons why firearms are necessary, the position held by the applicant, the category of firearms required to use, the nature of the duties undertaken in the conduct of your business/occupation.

Business public liability insurance – Copy of your Public Liability Insurance.

If you are an employee of a livestock transporter, your employer provides this information for you to supply with your application.

If your employer holds a group licence, you will need to ensure the group licence number and expiry date are included in the space provided on your Form 1 – Application for a Licence.

Occupational - Mobile butcher

Business plan – Copy of your Business Plan with Business Name – please only include pages relevant to the following: Addressing Risk, Police Contact, Firearm Use and Community Safety

Business public liability insurance – Copy of your Public Liability Insurance

Safe food certificate – A copy of your current Certificate of Accreditation issued by Safefood Queensland

  • the position held by the applicant
  • the category of firearms required to use
  • the nature of the duties undertaken in the conduct of your business/occupation.

If you are an employee of an mobile butcher, your employer provides this information for you to supply with your application.

Occupational - paintball gallery employee

Proof of occupation – employee of paintball – A current dated and signed letter from a paintball field official stating that you are an employee of the business.

Occupational - prawn/fish farm

  • the reason why firearms are necessary
  • the position held by the applicant
  • the category of firearms required to use
  • the nature of the duties undertaken in the conduct of your business/occupation.

Business plan – Copy of your business plan with business name – please only include pages relevant to the following: Addressing Risk, Police Contact, Firearm Use and Community Safety

Business public liability insurance – Copy of your public liability Insurance

Prawn & Fish Farm Mitigation Permit - A copy of your Damage Mitigation permit indicating bird problems exist that require the use of firearms on a prawn/fish farm. 

If you are an employee of a prawn or fish farm, your employer provides this information for you to supply with your application.

You will need to supply a Form 1 - Annexure for Occupational/Employment with your online application however, if you apply hard copy, this will not be required.

Business public liability insurance – Copy of your public liability Insurance

Veterinary surgeons board -  Provide a copy of your current annual registration with the veterinary surgeons board of Queensland, showing that you are the holder of a recognised veterinary degree.

Paintball club

Financial club membership – paintball permission – A current dated and signed letter from a paintball field official stating that you have permission to play paintball.

Qualified weapons employee

Business/employer letterhead – A current and signed letter on a business letterhead verifying:

  • the reason why firearms are necessary
  • the position held by the applicant
  • the category of firearms required to use
  • the nature of the duties undertaken in the conduct of your business/occupation.

If you wish to use firearms for another purpose, you should choose another genuine reason as your primary genuine reason and use this genuine reason as an additional genuine reason. (For example: you may wish to apply for a Sports or target shooting firearms licence and provide financial membership for your local gun club.  You may also supply this business/employee letterhead to hold the licence for your qualified weapons employment and you will receive conditions on your licence which allow you to do both.)

Recreational - approved weapons club

Financial club membership – Proof of current membership of an approved Queensland weapons club. This proof is to include the name of the club, your name, and the expiry date of your membership.

Recreational - fishing (powerhead)

No supporting documents are required for evidence of your genuine reason for a firearms licence.
