Applying for a new firearms licence in Queensland

Posted 29/08/2018

In Queensland, if you want to apply for a new Weapons Act licence, you can apply online using the Apply section of this website. Once you have completed your application, a confirmation email is sent to the email provided during the online application containing your application case reference and your payment receipt number. A copy of this email should be kept for your records.

For a new online licence application, within 24 hours, you will also receive advice that you need to attend a participating Australia Post outlet to complete your proof of identity check and have your photo taken (for free).

Your proof of identity check must be completed within 28 days of lodgement of your application. Failure to complete your proof of identity check will result in your application being void and the application must be withdrawn for a full refund.

OR, you can lodge a hard copy application found with our fees and forms. This application can be lodged at your local participating Australia Post outlet. You will be required to complete your Proof of Identity check at time of lodgement. Please click here for acceptable Proof of Identity documents.

To be issued a Weapons Act licence, you are required to have a genuine reason for the licence.  You may even have more than 1 genuine reason, which is ok.  If so, you are required to supply the supporting documentation for each Genuine Reason.

Once you have decided what weapon categories you'd like, what type of licence is right for you, and your genuine reason, proceed to the Apply section of the site.

Please note - if you were issued a previous weapons licence that did not have an expiry date, please insert 1998 when asked on the application form.

To choose which licence type may be best for you and what supporting documentation you need to supply, firstly decide whether you are applying for a licence as an Individual or a Business below.
