Police Referrals

The QPS has been connecting at risk and vulnerable community members to external support services across Queensland for over a decade.

Police Officers use every engagement with community members to identify support needs and offer referrals to external service providers. Referrals can be made for a broad range of social and lifestyle issues, including those that can increase the likelihood of either becoming a victim of or perpetrating crime.

Using a semi-automated system, Police Officers can connect people with relevant support services under a broad range of categories:

  • community support
  • domestic violence
  • family and youth support
  • health and wellbeing
  • homelessness
  • identity theft and fraud
  • legal
  • mental health
  • seniors
  • victim support.

When a community member consents to an offer of a Police Referral for themselves or a child under 16 years old, they will be contacted by one or multiple service providers depending on the support required. The service provider will either reach out to discuss the referred persons support needs and what their service can offer, or send an information pack about the service so that the referred person can reach out for support when they are ready.

Information on the specific nature of services is not shared with the QPS.
