Biography/Story

Constable Harry Wells was a police officer with the Kent Country Constabulary for five years at Dartford and Swanby Stations before he moved to Australia. He was 28 years old when he was sworn in as a Constable in March 1914. Wells joined the A.I.F. on 19 April 1915 and was allocated to 'B' Company of the 26th Battalion as a Sergeant. Wells embarked aboard HMAT Ascanius A11 from Brisbane on 24 May 1915 as part of the 26th Infantry Battalion. During the Battle of Pozieres on 28 July 1916, Sergeant Wells was seriously wounded in the abdomen and evacuated to England. He returned to the battleground on 29 December 1916. On 31 March 1918, Sergeant Harry Wells was killed in action at the age of 33 at Ploegsteert Wood, Flanders.
