Policing in schools

The Policing in Schools capability comprises of School Based Police Officer (SBPO), School Support Officers (SSO) and the Adopt-a-Cop programs. The overall purpose of this capability is to support primary and secondary school aged youth within the school environment to reduce harm, offending behaviours and/or are at risk of educational disengagement. This is achieved through engagement activities, program delivery and referrals. 

School Based Police Officers

School Based Police Officers are sworn members of the Queensland Police Service who provide support to designated schools or school areas within Queensland.

School Support Officers

School Support Officers are unsworn members of the Queensland Police Service, who provide assistance to schools across Queensland. Each year School Support Officers are designated a small number of primary schools to support which are within the Police district they are employed in. 

Adopt-a-Cop

Adopt-a-Cops are Police Officers and Police Liaison Officers (Adopt-a-PLO) who volunteer to participate in the program in addition to their regular duties. Adopt-a-Cops are generally appointed a primary and secondary school, however, may also be appointed to special schools, early childhood centres and other community groups. The Adopt-a-Cop program has been operating since 1985 and was introduced to help foster a positive relationship between Police and Students.
