The Queensland Police Service Medal (QPSM) was introduced in 1999 to recognise the diligent and ethical service by QPS members and is not granted as a right by virtue of long service. In 2009 the Commissioner approved a change in the eligibility criteria for the award to be made available to living former members who served in the QPS before the introduction of the QPSM.
The QPSM may be awarded to a former member who:
- has completed 10 years full-time qualifying service, or the equivalent in part-time service that in aggregate amounts to 10 years
- has met the required standards regarding diligent and ethical service
- is, in the opinion of the Commissioner, a fit and proper person to receive the award.
Applicants are advised that there may be some delays when processing applications.
- 32mm riband with central light blue band and two deep blue bands with a silver stripe on each edge
- Clasp representing years of service, awarded in five-year increments starting at 15 years
- Crown of St Edward
- Inscribed with DILIGENT AND ETHICAL SERVICE
- Police emblem
Clasp
A clasp (denoting the number of completed years of qualifying service recognised by the award) may be awarded to a medal recipient upon completion of each additional five years full-time qualifying or equivalent service, provided:
- the five years full-time qualifying service (or equivalent) was accrued within a period during which the person was an employee of the Queensland Police Service
- the member or former member is, in the opinion of the Commissioner, a fit and proper person to receive the clasp.
Wearing the medal
The Queensland Police Service Medal is an unofficial award and is not recognised under the Australian Honours System. As such, the medal is to be worn on the right breast.
