Biography/Story
Patrick Ryan drowned in the shipwreck of the ketch 'Port Stewart' during a cyclone. He was escorting an Aboriginal prisoner from Port Stewart (east of Coen) to Barambah Mission Station (renamed Cherbourg in 1931). Everyone on board downed and the wreck was subsequently located five to seven miles south of Port Stewart.
