Biography/Story

Constable Oswald Goodrich joined the Queensland Police at the age of 21 on 14 May 1915. He was the youngest of four brothers all of whom joined the A.I.F. on 13 August. Private Goodrich embarked on 5 October 1915 aboard the HMAT Warilda A69 as part of the 15th Infantry Battalion bound for Egypt. He succumbed to illness before disembarkation and was diagnosed with pleurisy caused by influenza. Oswald was transferred to the 12th Light Horse Trench Mortar Battery in July 1916 and promoted to Corporal. Goodrich succumbed to Illness again in early August 1916 from bronchitis. He returned to his unit a month later at which time they were supporting the Battle of Pozieres. Corporal Goodrich, age 23, was killed by a shell splinter in the attack on Passchendaele Ridge, Belgium, on 12 October 1917.
