Biography/Story

Constable George Dewhurst joined the Queensland Police on 11 February 1914. In December he enlisted in Cairns and was allotted to the 25th Infantry Battalion. The 25th Battalion was dispatched to Anzac Cove arriving on 11 September 1915 and took over the line at Cheshire Ridge. In late September of that year Sergeant Dewhurst fell ill and was evacuated to Mudros, Greece. On 12 October he returned to his Battalion. Several men fell ill due to a monotonous diet devoid of fresh fruit and vegetables. George and others were again evacuated with jaundice and it took many months for him to recover. He rejoined his Battalion in France on 30 September 1916 at Abelle, where the troops were resting following the Battle of Pozieres. Just after midnight on 5 Nov 1916 at Flers, whilst with others digging a jumping off trench in preparation for an upcoming attack, Dewhurst was shot through the body by a sniper and died within minutes.
